Keynote Panel Discussion:
Smart Meter Data Protection: A Privacy by Design Approach
For utilities, making the shift from “dumb” to “smart” interactive meters can make a significant impact on efforts to manage energy loads and conserve power. The volume of data collected by an advanced metering infrastructure will dwarf the current volume of data by several orders of magnitude. This modernization of the energy grid presents an opportunity to rethink how consumer energy usage data is managed and protected. Now is the time to take a “Privacy by Design” approach to promote consumer trust and confidence. Topics to be discussed are:
- Managing smart meter data and privacy through best practices
- Operationalizing Privacy by Design
- Fostering value added innovation AND protecting smart meter data
Moderator: Bob Lockhart, Senior Analyst, Pike Research
Panelists:
Michelle Chibba, Director, Policy Information & Privacy Commissioner, Office of Ontario (IPC)
Mark Enstrom, Program Management Director, Neustar Labs
Christopher Villarreal, Smart Grid Staff Lead, California Public Utility Commission (CPUC)
Christine Wright, Senior Policy Analyst, Infrastructure and Reliability Division, Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC of TX) |
| 9:30 – 10:00 am |
Speaker Speed Networking
A chance for delegates to meet program speakers and ask more questions |
| 9:30 – 10:30 am |

| 10:30 – 11:10 am |
Panel Discussion: Looking Forward – Trends in Interoperability and Standards Across Water, Gas and Electric
- Find out which key developments are proving most successful within the implementation of an interoperable, secure, yet scalable Smart Grid
- As the integration of smart grid technology advances the demands for a well-managed interface supported by proven standards tests are evolving. Find out the
effect that will have on your utility.
- Learn how to overcome the challenge of systems which include components within differing Smart Grid domains and/or incorporate components based on
multiple standards, either in one product or across the system
Moderator: Dave Elve, Vice President, Sensus
Panelists:
Michael Garrison Stuber, Engineering Advisor, Office of the CTO, Itron Inc.
Erich Gunther, Chairman, CTO and co-founder, EnerNex Corporation
Mark Podorsky, Senior Manager, Edison SmartConnect™ Business Integration, Southern California Edison (SCE) |
| 11:15 – 11:40 am |
| METERING AMERICA TRACK
The impact of EVs on the meter
- Preparing for Electric Vehichle’s impact on the electric infrastructure, particularly in residential areas where as much as 80 to 90 percent of EV charging is expected to occur
- Analyzing the costs and benefits of different EV integration options
- Reducing a utility’s operational and financial risks while benefiting customers by providing attractive rates for EV charging and better grid reliability
J.C. Martin, Home Area Network -Manager, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) |

MDM/BILLING/CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT TRACK
MDM: Interfacing with Legacy Applications
Your MDM will only deliver a fraction of its full value unless it connects correctly
and robustly with your legacy applications.
- Learn which legacy apps can benefit from meter data (more than you think)
- Discover which apps need to send the data back in the other direction
- Specific real world IT techniques for setting up a system that makes future
connections fast, simple and safe. This session will also cover the importance
of application programming interfaces (APIs) for data connections now and
in the future
Nu Pho, Senior Program Manager, Edison SmartConnect™ IT, Southern California
Edison (SCE) |

MDM/BILLING/CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT TRACK
Third Party Access and its Role in Customer Engagement
- With over 4 million meters installed and data available at a 15-minute basis,
Texas will be launching a model for third parties to have access through Smart
Meter Texas (www.smartmetertexas.com) with customer permissions
- In Texas, customers own their data, and so third party access is a critical
component to the ongoing smart grid initiative
- Learn how stakeholders have come together to reach a consensus on policy
issues and developed an operational model for standardized third party
access
Christine Wright, Senior Policy Analyst, Infrastructure and Reliability Division, Public Utility Commission of Texas, (PUC of TX) |
